“I’m half black, half white,” Jessica Lucas explains. She’s also as Canadian as they come. “You’d have to dig pretty deep” into her family tree “to get out of Canada,” she says. Born and raised in Vancouver, Jessica Lucas has been acting since she was mere seven years old. She began her professional training with Children’s Theatre Arts from 1992 through 1994. Lucas earned theatre credits in local productions of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Grease, Cinderella, Mousetrap and Music Medley.
From 2000 onwards, Jessica started to get parts in television roles and independent features, including Seven Days, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, The Sausage Factory, Damaged Care, 2030 CE and The L Word. She was also a series regular on the popular Canadian teen show Edgemont (2001-2005), along with Kristin Kreuk and Grace Park. Between 2004 and 2005, Jessica starred as Sue Miller in the ABC drama, Life As We Know It alongside Kelly Osbourne and Missy Peregrym. Unfortunately the series got axed after only 13 episodes. In 2006, Jessica starred in her first mainstream movie, She’s the Man, alongside Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum. Next, Jessica took on The Covenant (2006) before joining the cast of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in its 2007 season, playing a new character, Ronnie Lake. The character, once a temporary “band aid” to replace Sara Sidle, was announced as a recurring character on the show. However, Jessica only appeared in a total of four episodes. In 2008 Jessica starred in Matt Reeves’ blockbuster Cloverfield as Lily Ford. The movie was well received by both the audiences and critics alike and helped to raise Jessica’s profile. “When we first auditioned, it had no title. I actually thought I was auditioning for Star Trek, because that was the big buzz around town, that this project was really Star Trek. The part I read for was just a generic character. It gave me no idea what the story was about. Even when I actually booked it, I didn’t know. We finally got a completed script two weeks before shooting. I had no idea it was a monster movie until then,” said Jessica. Lucas also starred in the horror flick Amusement, released in 2009.
In 2008 Jessica had a recurring role as Kimberly “Kim” McIntyre in 90210 and will next appear on Melrose Place (2009) as Riley Richmond. There is no doubt that this actress is on the way to serious stardom.
“When I tell people [at home] I’m an actress, no one is impressed,” she says, laughing. “I tell them, ‘But I was in a movie with Amanda Bynes!’”
